Dynamics 365 migration FAQ

Straight answers to the questions we hear most, with Microsoft sources for every date.

When does Microsoft Dynamics GP support end?

Microsoft ends Dynamics GP product enhancements, tax updates and technical support on December 31, 2029. Security updates, if needed, continue until April 30, 2031. The last day for new customers to license GP subscriptions was April 1, 2026. Source: Microsoft Learn — Dynamics GP.

Should a Dynamics GP company move to Business Central or Finance & Operations?

Microsoft points GP customers to Dynamics 365 Business Central, and for most GP companies it is the natural fit: similar scope, a built-in cloud migration tool, and a far lighter footprint than Finance & Operations. Finance & Operations is worth evaluating only when you run complex multi-entity, multi-country or high-volume manufacturing and distribution that already strains GP.

Is Dynamics NAV still supported?

Dynamics NAV 2018, the last NAV release, left mainstream support in January 2023 and its extended support ends on January 11, 2028. Dynamics NAV 2017 extended support ends on January 11, 2027. NAV 2016 extended support ended in April 2026, and earlier versions are also out of support. Sources: NAV 2018, NAV 2017, NAV 2016 on Microsoft Lifecycle.

Can Dynamics NAV be upgraded straight to Business Central online?

Usually not in one step. Microsoft documents NAV upgrades as a path through intermediate Business Central releases, and C/AL customisations must be converted to AL extensions along the way. Once the solution is on a supported Business Central version, it can move to Business Central online. Source: Microsoft Learn — Business Central upgrade paths.

Is Dynamics AX 2012 still supported?

No. Extended support for Dynamics AX 2012 R3 ended in January 2023, so there are no further security updates from Microsoft. Source: Microsoft Lifecycle — Dynamics AX 2012 R3.

Which AX versions can be upgraded to Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations?

Microsoft supports upgrades to the cloud version of finance and operations apps from AX 2012 R2 and AX 2012 R3. AX 2012 RTM and earlier AX versions need a re-implementation with data migration instead of an upgrade. Source: Microsoft Learn — Upgrade from AX 2012.

When does Dynamics SL support end?

Extended support for Dynamics SL 2018, including security updates, ends on July 11, 2028. Microsoft has also said January 15, 2030 is the last day to add perpetual users to existing SL systems. Sources: Microsoft Lifecycle — Dynamics SL 2018, Microsoft Dynamics 365 blog, June 2025.

How much does a Dynamics 365 migration cost?

It depends on four things more than anything else: how many legal entities and modules you run, how much custom code and how many integrations you carry, how much history you bring forward, and how much of the work your own team can take on. We give you a written scope and price after a short assessment, not a number off a rate card. Licence pricing is published by Microsoft.

How long does a migration to Business Central take?

A single-company move from GP, NAV or SL with light customisation is typically planned in months, not years. Multi-entity, heavily customised or AX-to-Finance & Operations projects take longer. The honest answer comes out of the assessment, where we map your data, code and integrations and put dates against them.

Do we have to bring all of our historical data across?

No. Most companies bring master data, open balances and open transactions, plus a limited window of history, and keep the old system or an archive read-only for audit. Microsoft's GP cloud migration, for example, lets you choose how many historical years to move. Source: Microsoft Learn — GP data migrated to Business Central.

Do we have to move to the cloud?

Business Central is available online (SaaS) and, for some customers, on-premises. Microsoft is concentrating new investment on the online version, so most migrations we scope target Business Central online. If you have a hard requirement to stay on-premises we will tell you what that costs you.

Who will actually do the work?

The people you speak to in the assessment are the people who plan and run the migration. We do not hand your project to an unnamed offshore team after the contract is signed.

How do we start?

Fill in the contact form with your current system and version, and use the project field for the number of companies and users and any deadline you are working to. You can paste or attach an RFP if you have one. We reply with a short list of questions and a time for a call.
