Dynamics AX to Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations

Dynamics AX 2012 is out of support. Microsoft provides an upgrade path to Finance & Operations for AX 2012 R2 and R3, and is clear that it is a framework, not a push-button job.

Where things stand

Extended support for Dynamics AX 2012 R3 ended in January 2023 (Microsoft Lifecycle). Systems still running AX receive no security updates from Microsoft.

Microsoft’s AX 2012 upgrade guidance supports moving AX 2012 R2 and R3 to the cloud version of finance and operations apps, including your full transactional history, using a code upgrade service and a data upgrade process. It also states plainly that AX 2012 upgrades are complex and need data clean-up, tuning and customisation work.

What the migration covers

Upgrade analysis

Microsoft’s upgrade analyzer finds data to clean up, deprecated features in use, and settings to fix. Its output becomes the first draft of the plan.

Code upgrade

AX 2012 code is run through the code upgrade service, conflicts are resolved, and over-layered code is moved to extensions.

Data upgrade

Upgrade rehearsals in development and sandbox environments, tuned until the production run fits your downtime window.

Fit-gap

Standard Finance & Operations processes are compared with how you use AX today, so you retire customisations the product now covers.

Attachments and integrations

Document attachments are moved into the database before upgrade; integrations are rebuilt on supported interfaces.

Mock cutover

At least one full rehearsal of the cutover, timed, before the go-live weekend is booked.

What to watch for

  • Virtual companies and data partitions block the standard upgrade. Check for them first.
  • AX 2009 and AX 2012 RTM have no direct upgrade path; plan a re-implementation with data migration.
  • Database size drives both upgrade time and part of the subscription cost. Archive and clean up early.
  • Some companies that run AX are better served by Business Central. Size the decision before the project.

Questions we get about this path

Is Dynamics AX 2012 still supported?

No. Extended support for Dynamics AX 2012 R3 ended in January 2023, so there are no further security updates from Microsoft. Source: Microsoft Lifecycle — Dynamics AX 2012 R3.

Which AX versions can be upgraded to Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations?

Microsoft supports upgrades to the cloud version of finance and operations apps from AX 2012 R2 and AX 2012 R3. AX 2012 RTM and earlier AX versions need a re-implementation with data migration instead of an upgrade. Source: Microsoft Learn — Upgrade from AX 2012.

How much does a Dynamics 365 migration cost?

It depends on four things more than anything else: how many legal entities and modules you run, how much custom code and how many integrations you carry, how much history you bring forward, and how much of the work your own team can take on. We give you a written scope and price after a short assessment, not a number off a rate card. Licence pricing is published by Microsoft.

Who will actually do the work?

The people you speak to in the assessment are the people who plan and run the migration. We do not hand your project to an unnamed offshore team after the contract is signed.
