Dynamics GP end of life: the dates and your options

Microsoft has set firm end dates for Dynamics GP. This page lists them, with sources, and lays out what a GP company can realistically do next.

The official dates

From Microsoft’s Dynamics GP documentation and its June 2025 announcement:

DateWhat changes
April 1, 2026Last day for new customers to license Dynamics GP subscriptions.
December 31, 2029Product enhancements, regulatory (tax) updates and technical support end. This date was moved from September 30, 2029 so customers can finish a full payroll and tax year.
April 30, 2031Security updates, if needed, end. Service plan coverage ends, subscription licences can no longer be renewed, perpetual users can no longer be added, and SPLA subscription use is expected to end.

What it means in practice

GP will not stop working on January 1, 2030. What stops is the flow of tax tables, year-end updates and fixes, and Microsoft support. For US companies that run payroll in GP, the tax update is the date that matters. After April 2031 you would be running finance on software with no security patches.

Partner capacity is the other constraint. Every GP customer has the same deadline, so the closer it gets, the harder it will be to book experienced people.

Your realistic options

  • Move to Business Central. Microsoft’s recommended path, with a built-in GP migration tool. The right answer for most GP companies. How the GP to Business Central migration works.
  • Move to Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations. Only if you have outgrown GP’s scope: many entities and countries, complex supply chain or manufacturing.
  • Move to a non-Microsoft ERP. Possible, but you give up the migration tooling and the familiarity your team has with Microsoft finance software.
  • Stay on GP past 2029. Workable for a short, planned overlap such as a read-only archive. Risky as a strategy.

Questions about GP end of life

When does Microsoft Dynamics GP support end?

Microsoft ends Dynamics GP product enhancements, tax updates and technical support on December 31, 2029. Security updates, if needed, continue until April 30, 2031. The last day for new customers to license GP subscriptions was April 1, 2026. Source: Microsoft Learn — Dynamics GP.

Should a Dynamics GP company move to Business Central or Finance & Operations?

Microsoft points GP customers to Dynamics 365 Business Central, and for most GP companies it is the natural fit: similar scope, a built-in cloud migration tool, and a far lighter footprint than Finance & Operations. Finance & Operations is worth evaluating only when you run complex multi-entity, multi-country or high-volume manufacturing and distribution that already strains GP.

Do we have to move to the cloud?

Business Central is available online (SaaS) and, for some customers, on-premises. Microsoft is concentrating new investment on the online version, so most migrations we scope target Business Central online. If you have a hard requirement to stay on-premises we will tell you what that costs you.
