Dynamics GP to Business Central migration

Microsoft ends Dynamics GP support on December 31, 2029 and directs GP customers to Business Central. Here is what the move involves and how we plan it.

Where things stand

Microsoft announced the end of Dynamics GP in 2024 and has since confirmed the dates on its Dynamics GP documentation: product enhancements, regulatory (tax) updates and technical support end on December 31, 2029, and security updates, if needed, end on April 30, 2031.

Microsoft’s recommended destination is Dynamics 365 Business Central. Business Central includes a cloud migration tool for GP that can bring across system and company setup, master data, open transactions and a chosen window of history (Microsoft Learn). The tool does the heavy lifting on data. The project work is everything around it.

What the migration covers

Chart of accounts and dimensions

GP account segments become a main account plus dimensions in Business Central. This is the design decision that shapes your reporting, so we settle it first.

Master data and open items

Customers, vendors, items, open receivables and payables, inventory and bank balances, validated against GP trial balances before cutover.

History

Summary or detail history for the years you choose, with older years left in a read-only GP or archive for audit.

ISV products and customisations

Each GP add-on is mapped to a standard Business Central feature, an AppSource app or a small extension — or retired.

Reports and integrations

Management Reporter, SmartList and SSRS reports rebuilt; payroll, banking, EDI and e-commerce integrations reconnected.

People and process

Role-based training on Business Central and a first month-end close done side by side with your finance team.

What to watch for

  • Payroll: Business Central does not include US payroll the way GP does. Plan a payroll provider early.
  • Fixed assets, project accounting and manufacturing need their own mapping exercise; they are not a straight copy.
  • Clean up inactive customers, vendors and items in GP before the first migration rehearsal, not after.
  • Run at least one full rehearsal on a copy of production data and reconcile it before you set a cutover date.

Questions we get about this path

When does Microsoft Dynamics GP support end?

Microsoft ends Dynamics GP product enhancements, tax updates and technical support on December 31, 2029. Security updates, if needed, continue until April 30, 2031. The last day for new customers to license GP subscriptions was April 1, 2026. Source: Microsoft Learn — Dynamics GP.

Should a Dynamics GP company move to Business Central or Finance & Operations?

Microsoft points GP customers to Dynamics 365 Business Central, and for most GP companies it is the natural fit: similar scope, a built-in cloud migration tool, and a far lighter footprint than Finance & Operations. Finance & Operations is worth evaluating only when you run complex multi-entity, multi-country or high-volume manufacturing and distribution that already strains GP.

Do we have to bring all of our historical data across?

No. Most companies bring master data, open balances and open transactions, plus a limited window of history, and keep the old system or an archive read-only for audit. Microsoft's GP cloud migration, for example, lets you choose how many historical years to move. Source: Microsoft Learn — GP data migrated to Business Central.

How long does a migration to Business Central take?

A single-company move from GP, NAV or SL with light customisation is typically planned in months, not years. Multi-entity, heavily customised or AX-to-Finance & Operations projects take longer. The honest answer comes out of the assessment, where we map your data, code and integrations and put dates against them.
